Friday, 27th of March, 2015: the last day of my exchange
This morning I woke up, knowing that the last day of my two-and-a-half months stay in South Africa had reached, but realization hadn't hit yet. It's unbelievable how quickly time can pass, and I just couldn't believe it was time for me to go back home.
In the morning Maarten and I booked a guided Township Tour, because we both felt like we hadn't seen that yet properly. We visited three different township areas, as well as a small kindergarten. At around 1 o'clock we arrived back in Cape Town, where I met with some friends from Herschel and had a nice last lunch together. Saying goodbye to them was really hard. You never know for sure if you will ever see them again...
At 9p.m. we met at the airport. This is where we all said goodbye. I couldn't believe I was about to go back home again. I've had the most amazing time in South Africa, and I am so grateful that I got this incredible opportunity. I had never thought that I would be so amazed by South Africa's beautiful nature, and that I would do so many extraordinary things. I've experienced daily life in South Africa as a Herschel student, went on the most wonderful outings, met so many new people, even created long-lasting friendships... I created memories which I will cherish for the rest of my life. It wasn't only a really fun experience, but also very educational: I’ve learned so many things, about South Africa’s history and its culture, but also from other people’s perspective at life. It's funny to see how life at another part of the world can be so different, yet so similar. I can honestly say this is the best experience I've had in my life so far...
I would like to thank certain people who made this exchange possible, and who made sure I had the best time. First of all Mr. Court and Mrs. Steijn, the exchange coördinators from Herschel and Bishops, for arranging the most wonderful trips and outings, and for allowing us to experience daily life at Herschel. I want to thank Mr. Schreurs and Mr. Luijken from the Rijnlands as well, for giving us this opportunity and also a huge thanks to the best host family I could have ever wished for, for letting me be a part of their family for so long, and for teaching me all about South Africa. Including my exchange partner Alexandra Parks, her friends, and all the other exchanges for sharing all these memories. Alex has truly become a great friend to me, and I'm so glad I've met her. Thanks for everything!
I realize that when I ever come back to South Africa, it will never be the same, which is sad, but also a good thing...
